I moved from Melbourne to Johor in 2022, to begin my new life as an educator at a wonderful International School. While I was nervous, I had visited Malaysia years prior for a holiday and was confident I would be able to adjust to the lifestyle there. After all, it was exactly what I was looking for – warm weather, great food, friendly people and a laid-back lifestyle.

And… Johor Bahru delivered! I had the time of my life. Two years after moving, my parents came to visit and they loved the experience just as much. This is my short guide for fellow expats to make the most of their time in Johor Bahru which has its own charm.

Here are 5 things to do in Johor as an expat:

  1. Try Local Food 🥘

Food is both amazing and affordable in Johor Bahru. Like many states in Malaysia, Johor has its own twist on local classics such as nasi lemak, otak otak and laksa. A good sign of where to eat, is anywhere you see a lot of locals. As a lone female expat, I preferred to eating in cafes, kopitiams or mamak restaurants.

Mamak — An Indian eatery where you can enjoy cheap, tasty dishes like roti canai, thosai (dosa) and teh tarik (pulled milk tea) . Many are open late, some open 24/7 and they usually have vegetarian options as well.

Kopitiam – For something focused on chinese/malay dishes, head to a local kopitiam (traditional coffee shop). They have breakfast, lunch and some dinner options (depends on the place though). One of my favourites is Kuu (Now called Tea Garden) as a franchise, they have multiple locations.

2. Enjoy the Coffee and Cake🥤

Malaysia has a deep cultural affection for beverages – whether its hot or cold and Johor has many offerings to try. From traditional kopi and teh tarik to sweet treats like bubble tea or specialty coffee at cafes such as Starbucks, there is something to suit everyones taste.

You will find that many coffee shops also sell desserts for a nice afternoon tea. Try any of the following spots and you won’t be disappointed. Pair your drink with a slice of cake or a local pastry for the full experience.

  • Founders Cafe: A great place for food and coffee. It can get quite busy though, so avoid peak times.
  • Starbucks – When you’re craving something familiar and after a quick bite to eat, Starbucks is a safe choice. They often have new beverages to try (hot and cold). Coffee and cake at Starbucks is a great way to unwind during your free time.
  • Seven Oaks Bakery: My favourite is the Eco Botanic branch. It’s less busy, which makes for a quieter, more relaxed experience.
  • off day cafe: A great place for a true lover of coffee.
  • Flowers in the Window: There is a reason this place is well regarded, it’s a must visit when in Johor.

3. Go Shopping!

Shopping is a favourite past time in Malaysia and mine too! It’s especially perfect in the afternoon, when the sun gets too hot and the air conditioning in the mall is a welcome relief. Each mall has its won vibe and benefits, making them a nice way to spend a day off. These are some recommended malls to explore.

Aoen Wall Bukit Indah – You can find all of your grocery needs here from fresh fish to marinated meat, snacks and daily staples. You can even grab lunch afterwards at the Aeon food section!

The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey – The ultimate shopping destination. You could spend hours here and still not see half the stores! You can watch movies, find the perfect birthday present and enjoy the many cafes or restaurants onsite.

Johor Premium Outlets (JPO): I usually head here when I need new shoes or specific branded items like T-shirts, shorts or other clothing. They carry most major brands, like Nike and Adidas, including come high end brands as well. You can find good quality products at a discount.

4. Sunday Roast at George and Dragon Cafe 🍖🇬🇧

If you are feeling homesick and craving an authentic Sunday roast, visit George and Dragon cafe. This family owned restaurant brings a British cuisine to Johor, alongside dessert options. Their full Sunday roast is not available every week, so make sure to book in advance. Head to their facebook page for the latest details and promotions.

5. Relax and Unwind at Desaru 🏖️

Desaru Beach is probably the best place to relax if you are looking for sun, sand and waves. It is located along the east coast of Johor, about a one hour drive from Johor Bahru. There’s plenty to do while visiting, you can stay overnight at one of the many resorts, exploring the Desaru Ostrich Farm and Fruit Farm or even enjoying the Adventure Waterpark.

When I visited, I stayed at the Lotus Desaru Beach Resort & Spa. An affordable and comfortable option, with its own private stretch of beach, pool, gym and an onsite restaurant. They also had a lovely buffet breakfast with lots of variety.

Johor Bahru has a lot to offer (despite it reputation for being ‘too quiet’) tasty local food, cool cafes, shopping and beaches, providing you with a welcomed break from the hustle and bustle of busier states like KL . As an expat, it can be overwhelming to decide what to do on your days off, I suggest starting off simple by exploring your local neighbourhood. Hopefully, you now have some activities to help you get started now 💫
