Thinking of travelling to Adelaide? My Do’s and Don’ts

Some people on the internet claim Adelaide is an underrated city – I would disagree.

Adelaide is not culturally diverse like Melbourne or activity overload like Sydney, but it does have a relaxed and easy going charm of its own. With plenty to offer travellers who enjoy history, art and some shopping. It’s not the best city in Australia, but a genuinely nice one – so its rated about right.

Adelaide is South Australia’s capital city and also home to its domestic airport. If passing through Adelaide airport you will find all the desired amenities: food, loads of lounges and retail stores.

When visiting Adelaide here is my tailored list of things to do – and avoid doing.

To Avoid

Travelling during a heatwave.
I did this (unlucky with the weather) and my hotel didn’t have a pool. Imagine!

Staying further away from the action.
I stayed at the Ramada on Pulteney Street, which meant I was further away from trams, food and shopping. Instead, stay stay near King William Street, Rundle Mall or the Central Market. This gives you a variety in terms of food and activities, all within a walking distance.

Staying in Adelaide too long.
There isn’t a lot do in Adelaide and the city itself is quite small, so treat it as an accompaniment when visiting south Australia. I would suggesting spending 1 to 3 days in the city before exploring the rest of South Australia.

To Do

Bring your walking shoes.
Adelaide is one of the best cities to walk around because you can reach most landmarks within about 20 minutes. Which is great for your fitness and saves money on transport.

Choose a hotel you’ll enjoy
Adelaide is the type of destination where you may want to splurge on a good hotel. Activities will eventually run out, but a luxurious hotel experience won’t.

Visit the central Market
Central Market is similar to South Melbourne Market. There are over 70 traders selling food, dessert, fresh produce and boutique retail items. I shopped here for fruit during my stay after having breakfast. There is also a store that sells gourmet pet treats if you would like to get some as a gift.

Take the tram to Glenelg beach.
The tram is most convenient method of transport with scenic views along the way. This is a must-do when visiting Adelaide. Glenelg beach has own main street and pier, making it a good option for a relaxing day or half-day trip. If you like St Kilda, you will probably love Glenelg, it feels calmer and safer in comparison.

Walk around the botanical gardens.
Adelaide’s Botanical Gardens are in a league of their own. There are diverse exhibitions and beautifully curated gardens to explore, like the Cactus and Succulent Garden and the Amazon Waterlily Pavilion. After appreciating natures beauty, you can visit the on-site cafe or restaurant for coffee or a meal.

I hope this guide gives you a fair idea of what to expect from Adelaide and helps you avoid making the same mistakes I did. Happy Exploring!
